Ropani or bigha — which system applies to my land?
It depends on where the land is, not who is selling it. Ropani, aana, paisa and dam are used in Kathmandu Valley and the hills. Bigha, kattha and dhur are used in the terai — Chitwan, Jhapa, Nepalgunj, Birgunj and the rest of the plains.
The two chains do not interlock. There is no whole number of kattha in a ropani, and converting between them is only meaningful on paper — a plot quoted in ropani is rarely described in kattha to anyone local.
What does 3-2-1-0 mean on a lalpurja?
It is a compound area, written largest unit first. In the hill system 3-2-1-0 means 3 ropani, 2 aana, 1 paisa, 0 dam. In the terai, 2-11-3 means 2 bigha, 11 kattha, 3 dhur. The calculator above takes each unit in its own box, so you never have to remember the order.
How do I work out the other side of a plot?
